Probiotics for AAD Prevention
Antibiotic-associated diarrhea affects up to 30% of patients receiving antibiotics. Prophylactic probiotic use is a well-established intervention.
First-Line Strains
The World Gastroenterology Organisation strongly recommends two specific probiotics for this indication:
- Saccharomyces boulardii CNCM I-745: Because it is a yeast, it can be taken simultaneously with antibiotics without degradation.
- Lactobacillus rhamnosus GG: Requires staggered administration (2 hours apart from antibiotics) but demonstrates equivalent efficacy.
